MEET DEACON STEVE & PAMELA BYARS

STS. SIMON & JUDE CHURCH, HUNTINGTON BEACH

By STAFF     9/13/2016

YEARS MARRIED: 35

CHILDREN: 2

YEARS IN THE DIACONATE: 1

HOW THEY MET: Working summer jobs at Disneyland

WHAT THEY DO FOR FUN: “We have some very ordinary activities for fun in that we like to go out to eat, to films and plays, and travel when we can, particularly up and down the California coast.”

HIS ROLE IN THE CHURCH: “My main tasks as a deacon are twofold: To take the best spiritual care that I can of the parish community which the bishop has assigned me and to make my pastor’s life a little bit easier. All of the activities which both of us take on in the parish ought to be in support of these two main goals.”

WHAT DREW HIM TO THE DIACONATE: “I was attracted to the diaconate because Pamela and I had spent the majority of our adult years establishing ourselves in our careers as educators. It seemed that the next obvious step was to give back something to God. Our diocese is large and vibrant and needs all of the vineyard workers which it can get. Serving as an ordained minister made the most sense to both of us.”

FAVORITE SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 31:8-9 — “Open your mouth in behalf of the mute, and for the rights of the destitute; open your mouth, decree what is just, defend the needy and the poor!”
