Rosters are out for the upcoming Pac-12 Conference football season, and bragging rights among the five Orange County-based Trinity League schools have already been declared.
Of the 39 graduates from Mater Dei, Servite, Orange Lutheran, Santa Margarita and JSerra who were on Pac-12 rosters at the start of fall camp, 15 played for Mater Dei.
The next closest school was Santa Margarita with nine, followed by Orange Lutheran (six), JSerra (five) and Servite (four).
Mater Dei’s presence is primarily anchored at two universities, USC and California, where five former Monarchs populate each of those teams.
For the Trojans, 2014 graduate Jonathan Lockett will likely receive the most playing among his brethren, as he’s in line to be their third defensive back in nickelback situations.
California, on the other hand, has several former Mater Dei players in the hunt for playing time on the offensive side of the ball.
One to keep an eye on is quarterback Chase Forrest, a redshirt sophomore who came into camp one of three players vying for the starting spot vacated by recent No. 1 overall NFL draft pick Jared Goff of the Los Angeles Rams.
Forrest, who started the entire 2013 season for Mater Dei and led the Monarchs to the Pac-5 Division title, was beaten out for the starting job by freshman Ross Bowers, leaving him to compete for the coveted back-up spot.
The player who could be snapping the ball to Bowers—and snapped the ball to Forrest at Mater Dei—is center Addison Ooms, a non-scholarship redshirt sophomore who moved atop the depth chart early in fall camp.
Malik McMorris is competing for the starting fullback position for the Golden Bears, and the 2015 Mater Dei graduate should be fun to watch coming out of the backfield at 5-foot-11, 300 pounds.
And if that’s not a big enough representation on the California offense, wide receiver Matt Rockett, one of Forrest’s prime targets in 2013, has appeared in 19 games off the bench the last two seasons and should earn additional playing time for the Golden Bears this fall.
That certainly makes the Oct. 27 game between California and USC at the Los Angeles Coliseum one to circle on the calendar.
Washington State won’t visit Southern California this season, but the Cougars’ pass-happy offense will be well-represented by a group of former Santa Margarita players.
The most noticeable will be wide receiver River Cracraft, the third-leading receiver on last season’s Washington State team that averaged a nation-leading 389.2 passing yards a game. Cracraft, who graduated from Santa Margarita in 2013, was named to this season’s Biletnikoff Award Watch List, which goes to the nation’s top receiver at the end of the year.
Kyle Sweet, another wide receiver who graduated from Santa Margarita two years after Cracraft, should also see plenty of playing time in the Cougars’ four-receiver set. Riley Sorenson is also set to return as the team’s starting center for a third straight season, and the 2013 Santa Margarita graduate is on another watch list as the nation’s top center.
Servite might have the fewest Trinity League graduates in the Pac-12 this season, but the Friars have the best chance of boasting a starting quarterback. Oregon redshirt freshman Travis Jonsen (known as Travis Waller when he played for Servite) opened fall camp in a dead-heat for the starting job with Dakota Prukop, a senior who transferred from Montana State.
Whoever wins the job for Oregon will inherit a high-profile position, as the Ducks enter the season ranked No. 22 in the nation in the USA Today preseason coaches’ poll.
