St. Edward the Confessor School’s academic decathlon team took first place in the overall competition at the California State Championships in Sacramento April 17, beating out nine other teams from dioceses throughout the state. Each of the 10 competing teams had won their respective diocesan competitions in early March.

In addition to the overall championship, the team placed second in both the logic quiz and super quiz competitions.

Awards in individual events were won by Ryan Barta (third place in social studies), Kate Cerniglia (fifth place in fine arts), Clare Crafts (first place in religion), Rich Meyer (fourth place in English), Gavin Rissling (first place in literature), Nicky Rowlett (second place in math) and Matthew Sloss (fourth place in science).

Meagan Rowlett also won an individual award in the current events category: first place with a perfect score.
Jackie Brady served as head coach of the team, along with a group of parents and faculty members.
