Thousands of Catholics to join several Diocese of Orange bishops, Christ Cathedral’s episcopal vicar, and the superintendent of schools at 2020 Catholic Night with the Anaheim Ducks.
The Friday, Feb. 21 game against the Colorado Avalanche is the fourth diocesan Catholic Night, providing a special event for parish and school organizations, as well as the opportunity for families and friends to grow in fellowship.
“We anticipate several of our bishops to attend along with Father Christopher Smith, the rector and episcopal vicar of Christ Cathedral,” says Hank Evers, diocesan marketing director. “Also planning to attend are Fr. Al Baca, director of the Office of Evangelization and Faith Formation, and Catholic schools Superintendent Dr. Erin Barisano.”
The first 1,000 discounted ticket holders will receive commemorative Anaheim Ducks Catholic Night hats, as well as the chance to go on the ice post-game for exclusive fun that includes a slap shot experience and a photo opportunity with Wild Wing and the Zamboni.
Prior to the 7 p.m. game, Rosary High School’s choir will sing the national anthem during St. Catherine’s Academy’s color guard presentation. Servite, Santa Margarita, JSerra and Mater Dei high school hockey players will provide intermission entertainment.
“Fans will see a whimsical video play on the scoreboard showing Wild Wing taking over Father Christopher’s office on Christ Cathedral campus,” Evers adds. “Several times during the game attendees will witness “Catholic Night” as the name and our logo will be displayed on all monitors in the arena, as well as on the scoreboard. And, something everyone loves to see: Bishop Kevin Vann riding on the Zamboni during one of the intermissions.”
Proceeds from Catholic Night at Honda Center will support student athletes participating in the Parochial Athletic League (PAL). The Parochial Athletic League benefits students and families at all Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of Orange, including our independent schools. Proceeds from last year’s event included a $10,000 sponsorship by the Ducks of the recent Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Exhibition.
“It’s too early to tell how much we will raise this year,” Evers notes, “but the Ducks have committed to sponsor the PAL Golf Tournament for $10,000. Bottom line – this is all about fun, fellowship, and a chance to openly be proud to be Catholic.”
